Do I Need a Laptop for College?

Once you start preparing for your first year of college, you’ll realize that you end up paying for a lot more than just your tuition. You have to buy all of the stuff for you to be able to completely live on your own while having a healthy and happy lifestyle.

You also have to buy everything to prepare yourself to actually have the tools you need to be successful in your education at school.

This can all get very pricey and you may have to decide between certain things to buy for school.

A question that a lot of people have is whether or not they need certain technology. A common question may be something like do I actually need a laptop or tablet for college? The answer is a resounding yes you need a laptop or notebook for classes at college.

The type of laptop or tablet you need depends on the different topics we discuss below.

This may be a hard question to comprehend before you are actually at school because you have no idea how college works.

Of course, you can ask other friends that are already in college, but when it comes down to it you are the one making the decision and spending your own money. Sure you may be getting a lot of money from your graduation party, but you already have to buy a ton of things for the dorm not to mention your tuition and books at school.

I completely understand how overwhelming all of this is as I myself definitely had to choose what I did and did not buy for college. However, having some sort of technology is actually super important when it comes to the current way that college classrooms are running.

Now, every college is different so I can’t speak for everyone.

But, I have spoken to a lot of my different friends that go to completely different sorts of schools and I can tell you that they have all said that they have used their laptop or tablet almost every single day.

I personally used my graduation party money to buy myself a new MacBook and I think that it was one of the best decisions that I made for my college education. It has come in handy so much and really helps me be a successful student through my first year of college.

Now it doesn’t really matter what kind of laptop or tablet you get as long as it doesn’t matter for your major. Usually, the only majors that require certain technology or engineering majors. And basically, the only thing that engineer majors can’t have is Apple products because of the different software that they use.

So make sure that you do some research on your specific major and what technology is needed before you go and spend a lot of money.

Term Papers for Class

If you didn’t have to write a lot of papers in high school, then you better get ready because college requires a lot of typing and a lot of papers to be written. If you didn’t already take your basic English classes in high school that count as college credit, then you’re going to be taking at least two writing classes at any university that you attend as a general education course.

It is going to be pretty hard for you to type on anything other than a laptop or a tablet with a keyboard. Make sure you have the right computer equipment for typing and printing out term papers.

Typing this many papers, then you don’t want your grades to suffer because you don’t have the right computer equipment. And it’s not just English classes that require writing either. There are many many classes that just require general papers to be written over what you were learning.

University Websites

Most universities may have several different websites that are very important to your education.

For me personally, there is a website that has all of your assignments and grades.

Everything that I need to know for every class is on this website and there are also many assignments that I actually have to turn in through this website. I have even taken exams and finals on my laptop through these websites.

As you can see if you don’t have your own laptop this could get very hard to accomplish.

It sucks that it has to be this way since technology is so expensive but this is where everything that is needed for every class is on this website. I also have many assignments that we have to turn in through this website.

I have even taken exams and finals on my laptop through these class-specific websites. As you can see if you don’t have your own laptop this could get very hard to accomplish. It sucks it has to be this way saying as computers can be so expensive but this is how it is.

It’s very nice that it is all online and it works very well, but obviously, it wouldn’t if you didn’t have your own device. This is just one of the reasons why I think it is definitely a priority to buy a good laptop or tablet for college.

Honestly, everything that I do for college is through a website.

I pay for my tuition online, I send my transcripts to scholarships committees online, and I can even look up online books through a website. Basically, everything that I do has been upgraded to be easily accessible online or to only be done online.

This is why it is vital that you really understand the importance of technology in a college education. Now, as I said earlier this is not how it is it every university as colleges are all different. But, I do know that most colleges keep their grades in assignments on an online website.

Libraries

Most colleges definitely offer libraries that have access to computers. Most of these libraries are not going to be open all the time and they’re always going to be very busy.

The two main libraries at my university are both very large, however, only one of them is a 24-hour library. And even our one library that has 11 stories can sometimes be so packed with students that I can’t even find a comfortable seat to study.

Granted, I go to a big school and I’m sure that things are different at smaller schools, but in general library’s are always going to be busy. I had to take one class where the program was not accessible on my laptop. I always struggled to find an open computer at the library to use.

It is just going to be a very big hassle if you don’t have your own laptop to use.

When you have your own laptop you can work anywhere at any time. And if you don’t you’re only going to be able to work at the libraries when they are open.

You have gotten this far to be able to attend university, so you want to make sure that you were doing everything in your power for you to be a successful student. If this means buying fewer room decorations to be able to buy a laptop that I think that it is well worth it.

Remember you’re number one priority at the University is your education.

Emails at College

I don’t think I quite understood the importance of emails until I got to college. Checking my phone every day consists of me also checking all of my emails including my school email.

Basically, the main way that professors, employers, or anyone else important are going to talk to you is through email. This means that any updates about classes or assignments are going to be sent to you through email.

Now obviously your email is easily accessible through your phone or any other device, but if you don’t have access to a smartphone or anything like that then you’re definitely going to need technology to be able to communicate with everyone through email.

Many times it is easier to manage emails through a laptop rather than using your phone.

Conclusion

Overall, I am not trying to make you feel bad if you do not have a laptop to take to college. Basically, what I’m trying to get across to you is how much technology has advanced over the past few years and how this has translated into college classrooms and college education.

In order for you to best prepare yourself for college, you need to make sure that you have a good source of technology. I was lucky enough to go to a university that gave out free iPads this year. Some universities are starting to do this which is a great idea, but even so, I still bought my own laptop.

It took a lot of saving and I had to give up other things, but I am very glad about the decision that I made. In the end, I just hope that you have all of the tools that you need to have a successful college education. I would call a laptop a necessity for college.
