Federal Pell Grant Application and Eligibility

Federal Pell Grants

Pell Grants are an essential aspect of funding for a college education. Without the Pell Grant, many wouldn’t be able to afford higher education. Not all students are eligible to receive a Pell Grant, and that’s what we’re going to talk about here.

Hopefully, after reading this, you’ll not only have a clear idea of what a Pell Grant is but also if you qualify to receive one.

There is nothing more critical to furthering your life than receiving a quality education. Those who can’t afford to go further in their pursuit of higher learning can lean on the Pell Grant. There are some other grants and scholarships you can apply for but we will just be focusing on the Pell Grant for this post.

No person who wishes to further their education should be held back just based on tuition.

Pell Grants are federal money set aside for those who wish to go to college. No one has more interest in you furthering your education than the government does.

They want to create a society of well-educated citizens who can compete with a highly competitive global marketplace. The government knows the only way to do that is by making sure every person has access to higher education.

How do you Apply for a Pell Grant?

There are three steps that you must take to apply for a Pell Grant.

All three of these things must be completed for you to apply for a Pell Grant. If anyone of these steps isn’t finished, then you won’t be eligible for a Pell Grant.

What Qualifies you for a Pell Grant?

Pell Grants are awarded to those who are considered low income. You must be a vocational or undergraduate enrolled or accepted by a participating school. Those who are unsure if they meet the financial requirements can apply.

The process is short and won’t take up too much of your time. There is no fee for the entire process regardless if you receive a grant or not.

Is Pell Grant and FASFA the same thing?

No, it isn’t. A Pell Grant is the money that you will receive that can be put towards your education.

FASFA is the form that you fill out to get the Pell Grant. It’s not possible to get a grant without first filling out the FASFA.

Do I Need to Fill out the FASFA to get a Pell Grant?

Yes, you do.

Every person who qualifies for a Pell Grant must first fill out the FASFA. If you need help, contact a counselor at your school or visit the financial aid department at the place of higher learning that you’re planning on attending.

What is Income Level to Qualify for Pell Grant?

The answer to this question isn’t as straightforward as many people would like to believe. The income level that people qualify for a Pell Grant varies from person to person. It depends on the family that you’re a part of.

If there are many children, then it’s possible that the amount of money earned can be higher. The bottom line is, you must be considered impoverished for the number of people living in your household.

Every household has different expenditures depending on the number of people and other factors involved.

How do I get my Pell Grant Money?

All of the money you receive from a Pell Grant goes directly to the institution for higher learning. Simply put, the college you are going to will get the money.

You will not receive a single dime of the Pell Grant money.

You can receive money if there are loans, other grants, or scholarships used towards your education and funds are leftover.

What Other Grants can I Apply For?

You should be aware that there are many other grants available for people of various income levels. It would be a mistake to only focus on the Pell Grant.

With that in mind, there’s the:

If you are a veteran, someone raised as a foster child, or someone with a disability, then it’s possible you qualify for grants that the general public doesn’t. You should talk to a financial aid advisor to make sure that you get all that’s coming to you.

No person can know everything available when there are so many grants, scholarships, and loan opportunities.

What is the Max Pell Grant for 2019 – 2020?

The maximum amount that a student may receive is $6,195. With that said, most people won’t qualify for the maximum amount. The process to come up with the amount is somewhat unknown, and it’s a shot in the dark as to how much you’ll get.

This is one of those things that you first have to fill out the forms and wait to see how much you’ll get. There is no way to be sure the amount you’ll receive from the Pell Grant. No one knows the exact amount, and any number is nothing more than a guess.

What is the EFC Number?

Your EFC number or Expected Family Contribution is a calculation a college uses to determine how much financial aid you’ll receive.

This number includes the Pell Grant along with other monies you’ll receive in the form of scholarships, loans, and other grants. It’s important to note that it doesn’t only calculate the amount you’ll receive only for your Pell Grant.

It takes into account the taxed and untaxed income of those living in your household. While the number tends to be fairly accurate, there’s no way to be 100% sure of the total amount you’ll receive without waiting and seeing.

What is a good EFC score to get the Pell Grant?

Many factors come into play with coming up with your EFC score. All of those factors boil down to how much money there is in your household.

An EFC score of 0 to 5273 will get you the most money possible. Those who have the lowest number will receive the most money.

There is a cut-off limit of $6,195. That is the most money you can receive from a Pell Grant no matter what your EFC score is.

That’s something to keep in mind when you see your EFC score and wonder how big of an impact it will have on your higher learning.

The amount of money you receive isn’t based upon the school you go to

You might be going to a community college, or a for-profit institution, and the amount you receive will be the same. The Pell Grant doesn’t increase or decrease depending on what type of institution you attend.

The money is set aside for each student to attend the school of their choice. With that said, you may not qualify for other grants and scholarships if you attend a for-profit school. You will have to check with each program to ensure the maximum amount is received.

Your major plays no role in the amount of money you receive through a Pell Grant

It may be surprising to some to learn that what you go to school for doesn’t matter when receiving a Pell Grant. Someone studying to be a doctor or a chef will receive the same amount of money according to their financial situation.

The only factor that plays a role in how much money you receive through the Pell Grant is your financial situation. Nothing else matters, and this also includes race, sex, and age.

Must you Reapply Every Year for a Pell Grant?

Yes, you do.

You will have to apply every year to get a Pell Grant. Don’t worry you’ll end up getting the process down pat. It’s not that difficult, and it won’t take you much time at all.

If you have any questions, contact the financial aid department of your school, and they will be more than happy to help you out. This is something they do every day. While the process does seem complicated at first, it’s standardized in the sense that it’s the same for everyone involved.

Is there anything that can disqualify you from receiving a Pell Grant other than income level?

Yes, there is.

If you’ve been convicted of a violent crime, you will not be eligible for a Pell Grant. Anyone who has received a prison sentence from a violent act cannot receive a Pell Grant. If you have been convicted and did time due to a crime, it’s best to ask your financial advisor if it disqualifies you for a Pell Grant.

It’s possible if you didn’t go to prison that you’re still eligible. This condition was added later on, and it wasn’t an original part of the legislation that created the Pell Grant.

Pell Grant and OIG Grant in 1990

I have a relative that back in the 90’s used the Pell and OIG grants to pay for college. We said earlier that these grants will no longer cover all of the cost for college. The point is every little bit helps and it’s one less college loan for you to have to pay back. Try to get as many grants and scholarships as you can when going to college.

Fill out the Forms and get Started Today

It doesn’t matter what time of year you’re reading this. It could be the middle of winter or school could even be already starting. The time to act is now when you have the urge to further your education.

You can see the writing on the wall. You know that your life isn’t going to get any better without first taking action. Right this very minute you need to decide what you’re going to do with the rest of your life. Those are the two choices you have, and there is no in-between ground. It’s either you choose to live a life where you provide for your family or leave their need unfilled.

Seek Out Help if it is All too Confusing

Don’t give up if you feel that everything is far too difficult for you to understand. Contact someone in the financial aid department or talk to the counselor at school if you’re a parent or student. These people are here to help you.

They get paid to work every day to ensure that students like you or your family members have the financial assistance required to further their education. Not asking for help isn’t just foolish; it’s setting yourself and those you love up for failure.
